A sense of placeBali, beyond the postcard.
Art, cafés, traditional performances and rice-field scenery make Ubud a rewarding inland base. Explore the town at walking pace, then leave room for a quieter outing in the surrounding countryside.
Choose accommodation by location: central convenience and countryside tranquillity offer different experiences.
Terraced fields spread across the highlands at Jatiluwih, where the subak irrigation tradition connects agriculture and community life. Follow established walking routes and appreciate the landscape as working farmland.
Wear shoes with grip and ask locally about the route length and current field conditions.
Natural springs and temple courtyards make Tirta Empul an important place of Balinese Hindu worship. Observe the setting thoughtfully; participating in a purification ritual requires understanding and respecting local guidance.
Ask staff about dress, permitted areas and ritual etiquette before entering.
Set above the Indian Ocean, Uluwatu combines a sacred temple setting with expansive cliff views. Its Kecak performance offers a memorable cultural evening when scheduled and tickets are available.
Secure loose belongings around monkeys, wear the required temple attire and stay behind barriers.
A temple on a coastal rock formation makes Tanah Lot one of Bali's distinctive seascapes. Enjoy the shoreline viewpoints as tides change the relationship between the rock and mainland.
Follow access restrictions and view the temple from permitted areas; tides affect the shoreline route.
Follow your curiosity. Choose a little adventure, a local story, or a slower way to spend the day.
Gentle to moderate walking

Rhythmic chanting and episodes from the Ramayana unfold against a coastal setting. Confirm the performance schedule and tickets, and give yourself time to explore the permitted temple grounds beforehand.

READY FOR YOUR NEXT CHAPTER
When to visit
Bali's drier season generally runs from April to October, with wetter conditions from November to March. Rain can occur in either season; keep outdoor plans flexible and expect cooler conditions in the central highlands.
Getting there & getting around
Fly into I Gusti Ngurah Rai International Airport and arrange a transfer to your first base. Allow generous road time between areas; traffic and local ceremonies can change a seemingly simple journey.
Choosing your base
Choose Ubud for inland culture and green surroundings, Sanur for a coastal base, or Seminyak for dining and beach evenings. For a longer trip, split inland and coastal nights rather than commuting across the island daily.
Plan by area
Ubud, Tabanan and the Bukit Peninsula are separate touring areas. Keep each day's route focused, agree transport arrangements in advance and leave time for traffic, meals and spontaneous stops.
Enter temples thoughtfully
Follow each temple's dress and access instructions, give ceremonies space and ask before photographing worshippers. At Tirta Empul, observing respectfully is a worthwhile visit even if you do not join a ritual.
Keep adventure flexible
Rafting, coastal activities and outdoor walks depend on weather and local conditions. Check requirements directly with the operator; select a gentler alternative whenever the activity does not suit your group.
